Again, suspended NIA DG, Oke appears before Osinbajo’s panel
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo-led panel on Monday for the second time in a week, had the suspended Director-General (DG) of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke, appear before it.
Oke had also on Wednesday last week appeared before the committee which was set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate him and the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal.
The NIA DG is answering questions on his claim that the money the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos belongs to the agency.
His second appearance on Monday is suspected to be in response to the submission of the EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, who on Friday, appeared before the committee to give evidence on what his commission discovered about the money, the owners and their plan.
Oke on his second appearance was said to have told the panel that he wrote a memo to the National Security Adviser (NSA) on the custody of the $43.4million for covert operations.
It was learnt that the NIA DG vehemently insisted that the NSA, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtf) who is a member of the committee, was aware of the money.
The NIA DG had said after the interrogation with the panel, “I did my best before the committee. I have left the rest to God.”
The committee which has the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Munguno (retd.), as members had last week said the investigation will be done behind-closed doors to allow for full disclosure.
The committee is to turn in its report within two weeks.
